Just below the village of Ness, high up on the north-west coast of the Isle of Harris, you will find Europie beach. Calling this place remote does not really do it justice. This place is virtually surrounded by the ocean. Even from the village, the beach is hidden, but if you follow the roar of the sea through the sand dunes, the reward is worth it. On the day I was lucky enough to visit, a retreating tide reveals wet, untouched sand still glistening like a mirror.
A dark stream of seawater, the wash from the breakers, gathers and flows back to the sea, leaving white foam stranded in its wake. The bright yet soft, unremarkable spring weather and movement in the clouds and water are blurred by the camera’s long shutter exposure.
The shallow 'depth of field' and narrow foreground focus accentuate this further. The result is an impression, time compressed into a single moment, a representation of what was actually there.
Like a watercolour.
